Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy

I feel like I need to preface this review with I had watched the BBC miniseries with Alec Guiness first which really makes it hard to judge this film. The reason is there is so much depth to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy that compressing it into a two hour film just doesn’t do the plot justice. However, they did do a great job on this film. The quality of acting is top notch. It should be with the caliber of actors in the film (Max Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Gary Oldman,…

Secret Village

Secret Village is like a bad version of the remake of The Wicker Man. A woman has come to a remote location to find out what happened during the Salem witch trials and various types of plagues. From there the plot becomes super predictable and that makes the film drag on. The acting feels unnatural and character development isn’t really there.  I felt like the movie pacing was unbelievably slow. The special effects in the film are low budget and fit the movie.  If you’re looking for a  D rate…

The Admiral

This Netherland film about one of its greatest naval heroes Michiel de Ruyter is fantastic. Special effects in the film is great and helped immerse me into the movie. The acting was incredible and the plot gave the characters depth. That made every scene in the film exciting. They also paid close attention to the little details like having people in the background using fire to bend the wood for the ship making. The Admiral did a great job keeping me hooked from the dramatic moments to the fast paced…

Dartmoor Killing

Dartmoor Killing is an interesting film because of the set up and delivery of the plot. It first felt like The Awakening with all the flashbacks, but then turned into Oldboy. The psychopath in the film does a great job at being cold and tactical then completely terrifying. However the character development leaves a lot to be desired. I struggled to care for the characters and what happened in the past because of their actions before the story came to fruition. For most of the film the plot was generic…

Uncanny

There are several movies dealing with intelligent A.I. however Uncanny deals with it a unique way. The film plot felt too predictable for most of the movie however it wasn’t at all what I was expecting. The issue for me was that by the time they had gotten to the meat of the movie felt too long and boring to care about the characters involved in the film. It is an interesting premise and could have more potential, but the character development was slow and rather boring. The special effects…

Behold A Pale Horse

Behold A Pale Horse is a black and white film about the end of the Spanish Revolution which stars Gregory Peck and Anthony Quinn. The flow of the movie is great and builds up to its inevitable climax in such a way that kept my attention and the ending was not what I expected which was a nice change of pace from the generic cookie cutter film. The acting in the movie is great. Gregory Peck does a wonderful job starting as a character I didn’t like then showing that…

Monsters Dark Continent

This film departs from its predecessor and takes on a much darker tone. It involves a group of soldiers who have found themselves placed in the middle of combat with the aliens and rebel forces. There is a film noir style of narration for the main character. The acting is good but the plot really kills the film. There is a coherent story line but the main point of the film gets lost through all the chaos. The pacing of Monsters Dark Continent is either painstakingly slow or action happening…

Monsters

Monsters is a sci-fi film which focuses on aliens who come from space and have spread into what they called the infected zone. The plot unfortunately is pretty generic. It literally is an alien version of Jurassic Park. The acting is mixed causing very weird dynamic which made me not care about the romantic story line at all. The beast are not original but the animation on them is fantastic. It was really cool to watch the creatures move and interact with the world. If you are jonesing for a…

ARQ

ARQ is a like a sci-fi Groundhogs Day. It is very hard to repeat the same situation over and over again while keeping it interesting, but this film does a decent job of doing that. However the film does start dragging on near the end. The special effects are good and there are plot twist galore in the film. The plot held my interest for most of ARQ. The character development and acting is rather flat but it does pick up during certain times. Camera angles and cinematography is very…

Let Us Prey

What if you took The Ninth Gate and mixed it with The Traveler? You get something along the lines of Let Us Prey. It is a surreal film to watch since the plot is almost the same as The Traveler because it deals with several slight twists which made the movie interesting. It is really dark and there is a decent amount of blood in the film. If you don’t like a lot of blood in you film I wouldn’t suggest this title. Liam Cunningham is the standout star in…
