The Imitation Game

I was honestly excited to watch The Imitation Game. However even though this movie is great and well done I just couldn’t love it. While the acting was incredible there was too much filler to make the movie feel amazing and something I wanted to watch multiple times. There were several awkward scenes in the film which makes it hard to watch. The Imitation Game felt like a bad version of Rashomon. The story was told out of order and while that can be done it didn’t feel as the same impact…

The Great Hypnotist

The Great Hypnotist is truly a trip to watch. From start to end the films plot really shines and makes the film worth watching. The depth of character development is remarkable and helps pull the viewer into the story. While it is great to have an amazing plot the special effects helped bridge the line between reality and the characters memory creating a dream like state for the full film. The only draw back of the film is what holds the plot together and that is the biggest twist of…

Red Dragon

The first film in the Hannibal Lector series takes the viewer on an amazing thrill ride full of twists and turns. The movie has a brilliant plot and makes Red Dragon feel like a really intellectual and slow paced nightmare which keeps the viewer at the edge of their seat. The acting of both Anthony Hopkins and Edward Norton are incredible. They bring the incredible depth to the characters and enhance the watching experience. The film has so many little things going on in it that it is worth watching…

Circle

Circle is a film where the entire plot takes place in one space much like Devil. The plot is drawn out and the movie is pretty painful to sit through. The dialogue is lackluster and there is several scenes that drag during the film. The concept seems good like Saw but there is little that redeems this film. It felt like the plot could be condensed into a half hour short film and it might be bearable because the plot twist isn’t worth sitting through the whole film. I would…

Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy

I feel like I need to preface this review with I had watched the BBC miniseries with Alec Guiness first which really makes it hard to judge this film. The reason is there is so much depth to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy that compressing it into a two hour film just doesn’t do the plot justice. However, they did do a great job on this film. The quality of acting is top notch. It should be with the caliber of actors in the film (Max Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Gary Oldman,…

Behold A Pale Horse

Behold A Pale Horse is a black and white film about the end of the Spanish Revolution which stars Gregory Peck and Anthony Quinn. The flow of the movie is great and builds up to its inevitable climax in such a way that kept my attention and the ending was not what I expected which was a nice change of pace from the generic cookie cutter film. The acting in the movie is great. Gregory Peck does a wonderful job starting as a character I didn’t like then showing that…

Jaws

Jaws is one of those iconic films that is both a masterpiece and tragedy. It is often rated in the top 100 greatest film ever made. However it’s impact that it has had on shark populations is staggering. That being said I will just be focusing on the film itself and not the issues surrounding the film. Jaws is great from the amazing lifelike mechanical shark to its incredible score. It is a treat to watch and can be watched time and time again. The acting is perfect even the…

Cat O’nine Tails

Cat O’nine Tails is an interesting film that brings together unusual characters and a unique plot that somehow works. While I did pick this up in a horror movie set, this film really isn’t quite horror and is more along the lines of an investigative crime film. The plot does move fairly slow and there are certain times where the viewer can easily checkout. It is a good film to watch if you need a mystery fix, but it isn’t the best either. It’s one of those movies which has…

Braveheart

This film is a modern classic and I can see why people like this film. That being said it wasn’t something that I would ever watch again. The plot felt extremely circular and while the subject is interesting the feeling of I’ve seen this before in the last 30 minutes was prevalent throughout the film. The battles were pretty intense and some were funny, but honestly this film was not worth the nearly three hours of watching time. This issue really has nothing to do with the acting make the…

Sanctum

Sanctum is an a mixed genre film including action, drama, and disaster film. This film has a very cliche and predictable plot. The acting is widely varied from good to bad not just from one actor to the next but scene to scene for the actor. While the film is meant to keep you on the edge of your seat there are several scenes that are feel really implausible, not improbable, that causes the viewer to question the plot of the film. Overall it is a decent film for a…
