American Ninja

American Ninja is a crazy 1980’s action film. The film itself is rather ridiculous and if you couldn’t tell by now it’s not a great film. However, there are several scenes and actions that makes it terribly great. The film might have been a serious film when it was created but it’s so over the top and absurd. I’m not saying that is a bad thing, but rather it really makes the film great to watch and have a laugh. The main character “Joe” (Michael Dudikoff) has about 20 lines in the entire film. The story line is insane and the romance angle feels like it was written by some middle school student. That alone makes the movie terrible, but what really made this film enjoyable to watch was the acting of Steve James. He provides so much for this film and honestly I wished the story would have been about him rather than Michael Dudikoff. If you’re looking for a low brow laugh then check out this film. Otherwise I would watch Enter the Dragon for all your martial art needs.

Bottom Line (Warning Contains Spoilers)

The plot to American Ninja is rather cliche and boring. Honestly I don’t feel even like it is worth mentioning. The action scenes are stereotypical and what you come to expect from a kung fu film. However there is some pretty dirty boxing going on from Steve James that is really over the top and provides some relief from the monotonous plot. There really isn’t much to say about this film because the film has everything you come to expect from a cliche action film. Fighting, crime ring, army corruption, stowing away, crazy stunts, and of course the obligatory RPG. It’s worth seeing if you want a laugh, but not if you want a more serious action film.
